Challenge
A seven-storey residential building over three basement levels required continuous geotechnical input during construction, with piling rigs, cranes and scaffold all bearing on ground that had to be verified as the works progressed.
Solution
KFM Geotech provided groundwater monitoring, piling inspection, piling and crane pad platform assessment, footing assessment by spoon testing, scaffold foundation assessment, and finite element analysis of the shoring wall.
Outcome
Ground-related hold points were cleared as they arose, with founding conditions, plant platforms and shoring performance verified on site rather than assumed from the design documentation.

When do I need a geotechnical engineer on site during construction?

Typically at the hold points where ground conditions control the works: footing excavations before pouring, piling platforms and crane pads before heavy plant is set up, batters and trenches before crews enter them, and subgrades before pavement layers go down. KFM attends these hold points, inspects and tests, and confirms whether the exposed conditions match the design assumptions.

An engineer or geologist inspects the exposed founding material in the excavation, confirms it matches the material assumed in the design, and tests it where required — typically DCP, plate load, or spoon testing for pad footings. KFM then confirms whether the founding level is acceptable or whether the excavation needs to be taken deeper.

Yes. KFM inspects and assesses piling platforms and crane pads, including proof roll testing and in-situ testing, and advises whether the platform will carry the rig or crane loads. Platform problems are a common cause of on-site delay, so it is worth booking the assessment before the plant arrives rather than after.

Yes. KFM provides piling supervision and piling platform inspection, including confirming founding conditions at pile toe level and recording what was actually encountered during installation.

KFM raises it on site, immediately. The engineer records what was actually exposed, advises on the options — deepening the footing, founding on a different stratum, or referring the matter back to the structural designer — and follows up with the documentation needed to support whatever is agreed.
